James Montgomery Flagg was born in Pelham Manor, New York in June 1877. He was an artistic prodigy with illustrations accepted by national magazines by the age of 12. By 14 he was a contributing artist for LIFE magazine and by 15 he was on the staff of JUDGE magazine. His comic strip NERVY NAT appeared in JUDGE from 1903 until 1907.

On June 7, 1912 Flagg’s artwork graced the cover of JUDGE.
