French Submarine Sinks With All Lost

The Vendemiaire is a submarine in the French Navy that was launched September 1910. Based in Cherbourg, France the French submarine fleet has had an unfortunate series of accidents losing 3 submarines in the past 2 years.

On June 8, 1912 the French Navy was having wartime maneuvers between Aurigny Island and and Cape Hauge. The submarines had received orders to attack battleships and were in the midst of pursuing the war games when the periscope of the Vendemiaire appeared right in front of the bow of the battleship St. Louis. The St. Louis could not stop and the Vendemiaire was ripped apart and sank in 150 feet of water. Violent currents made rescue or salvage virtually impossible. The entire crew of the Vendemiaire, 23 men, are believed lost.
