Priest’s 50th Anniversary Honored In Illinois

James J McGovern was ordained a Catholic priest on June 14, 1862. In 1880 he came to Lockport, Illinois where he completed a large church, established the schools and built the parsonage. In 1865 he published The Monthly, a Catholic periodical, the first in the west. He was also the author of the most extensive history of the Catholic Church in the state of Illinois.

On June 14, 1912 there was a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Father James J McGovern’s ordination as a priest in the Knights of Columbus Hall (note the picture of Christopher Columbus on the wall) in Lockport, Illinois.
