The First Motorized Fire Truck In Town

In 1785 Salem, North Carolina had the first fire engines in the state – two hand-powered pumps from Germany. In 1804 the “Market Fire House” was built in the Salem Town Square. In 1843 the “Salem Vigilant Fire Company” incorporated making it one of the first Fire Companies in North Carolina. In 1868 the Rough and Ready Fire Company is organiz

ed and Salem recieved its first Fire Chief. Later in the 1860’s an African-American Fire company is formed in the eastern parts of Salem and Winston.

On August 5, 1912 the Salem, North Carolina Fire Department received its first motorized fire apparatus — a Type 12 Triple combination motor car from American LaFrance Company.
