A History Of Events And Happenings From Exactly One Hundred Years Ago

100th Anniversary Of The Battle Of Borodino Celebrated

Napoleon I invaded Russia with the Grande Armee in June 1812. After initial victories the two countries fought at a village called Borodino. Although the French took the town, they lost a third of their forces, 70,000 men in one battle. It was the last offensive action fought by Napoleon in Russia and the Russian army preserved its combat strength eventually allowing it to force Napoleon out of the country.

On August 26, 1912 the 100th anniversary of Borodino battle celebrated all over Russia. Tsar Nichols II met and spoke with the Borodino veterans, the oldest of whom, Anton Vintonyuk was 128 years old. Commemorative coins were given to soldiers who participated in the celebrations. On them was written “This glorious year has past but the feats committed in it will never pass.”
