First Air Force in Australia

The first Colonial Conference where prime ministers and leaders of self-governing British colonies met was in 1887. The conferences have been taking place every 3-5 years in London and just recently changed the name to Imperial Conferences. At the last Imperial Conference in 1911 it was agreed that aviation should be developed within the armed forces of the British Empire. Australia is the first to act on the recommendation.

On September 20, 1912 the Secretary of the Australian Department of Defense approved the creation of the Australian Flying Corps beginning with the purchase of five aircraft and the hiring of two flight instructors.
