YWCA Student Conference In South Dakota

In 1855 social activist Lady Mary Jane Kinnaird’s General Female Training Institute and Emma Robarts’ Prayer Union formed the Young Woman’s Christian Association to be a social and spiritual support system for young English women. The first world conference of the YWCA was held in 1898 in London. In the US as industrialization expanded and the working class population grew, the mission of the organization became more social and educational than spiritual.

On October 18, 1912 the YWCA Student Conference met at the University of South Dakota. This photograph on the stairs of the Arts and Sciences building.
