100 Years Ago Today

A History Of Events And Happenings From Exactly One Hundred Years Ago

Political Cartoon On Presidential Election

Clifford Berryman was born in April 1869 in Clifton, Kentucky. At age 17 he moved from Kentucky to Washington DC to work as an illustrator in the US Patent Office. In 1891 he left to work for the WASHINGTON POST and within 5 years was their chief cartoonist. In November 1902 he drew a cartoon with Theodore Roosevelt and a baby bear. This inspired a toy maker Morris Michtom to produce the first “teddy bear.”

The US presidential election was 2 days ago and the Democratic victory has brought changes to the House and Senate. A surprised Miss Democracy is shown two days after the election carrying the House and Senate with the White House tucked under her arm; she is wondering what the change in leadership will bring.
