First Turkey Trot In Texas Town

The city of Cuero, Texas had its start in the mid 19th century as a stopping point on the Chisholm Trail cattle route to Kansas. Cuero’s population grew as residents from coastal towns in Texas settled there after major hurricanes destroyed portions of the coast. This saw the introduction and practice of turkey ranching in Cuero.

Turkey Trots are a local festival in the US held the week prior to Thanksgiving during which various turkey-centric events take place. The competitions revolve around the turkeys each town raises and takes immense pride in. The events are the prettiest turkey contest, turkey toss and turkey trot or and turkey races. On November 26, 1912 Cuero, Texas held it’s first Turkey Trot. Unlike most Turkey Trots where humans do the racing, in Cuero, the “turkey trot” involves racing actual turkeys.
