LIFE magazine February 4, 1915 Volume 65 No. 1684
The Cat and Dog Number
Cover art – “The Morning After” by Will Rannells

Will Rannells was born in Caldwell Ohio in 1892. As a young artist, he supported himself by illustrating. At age 19, he did a portrait of a collie that had previously been held in the arms of a girl. When he realized the dog looked better without the human figure, he painted the dog alone and sold it for $40. It later appeared on the June 1, 1912 cover of Country Gentleman.

Rannells has since done dog portraits for LIFE and other magazines.
