Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell in the basement of Conwell’s Baptist Temple, hence where the university receives its name. He wanted “to give education to those who were unable to get it through the usual channels”. In 1907 that Temple College revised its institutional status and incorporated as a university.

On February 10, 1915, the Temple University Girls team defeated the girls of the Beachwood School 33 to 7. The members of the team from right to left are: Irene Morrison (captain), Willamina Gates, Frances Hannington, Sara Taylor, Mabel Bockelmann, Anita Preston, Sara Ferris, Mary Zesinger and Bessie Taylor.
